Session Descriptions

Hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic University, this NATS Winter Workshop offers sessions whose focus is on the combination of old and new knowledge, skills, and tools needed by the 21st Century voice teacher. New awareness of vocal tract acoustics will provide practical tools to tune-up singing and teaching techniques; Feldenkreis “awareness through movement” will help bring unity and balance to the interaction of body and voice, leading to that singing fundamental, free release of the breath; and exploration of ways to release and nurture the creative spirit will open a path to the vital artistic goal, compelling performance.

Learn how to understand somatic awareness, our body map in voice production and training. Marina Gilman will help build a bridge between an intuitive approach to whole body awareness in singing and current research in the science of the singing voice. Through lecture and interactive sessions, Gilman will help us to recognize impediments to free use of the breath, in ourselves as well as in our students, and share proven strategies for releasing the breath and achieving balance.

Tap into your expressive side and release our personal creativity using improvisation techniques that we can employ both as singers and as teachers. Based on her years of experience working with singers in the OperaWorks program that she developed, Ann Baltz will also teach us a variety of specific techniques that can help us to remove impediments to more compelling performances in any genre.

Learn the acoustics of vocal registration and how this understanding can significantly enhance studio and choral pedagogy as well as one’s own singing. Topics addressed by Kenneth Bozeman will include female/treble resonance strategies, male passaggio training, the acoustics of belting, and useful studio/classroom technologies. Attendees will have opportunity to explore these principles in their own voices and observe their application in masterclass settings.

Bonus Sessions

arcadiaCruiseShip_2449967b.jpgThe Cruise Ship Scene with Nick Herman. Herman, who works regularly as a music director/vocal coach for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, will do an introduction course to building careers in the modern cruise ship industry, including  just what these gigs require today, how to prepare live or video auditions, current pop practice in diction and articulation, singing in pop styles without experiencing vocal fatigue, and working with a click track as opposed to a live orchestra. He will also teach a master class in preparing audition repertory,  plus a group experience in singing through excerpts of typical cruise ship show repertory in a variety of music styles.

Four-Arts-Celebration.jpgThe Teaching Legacy of Bel Canto Technique: Virginia Zeani to Marilyn Mims to Virginia Mims. Renowned, international soprano Virginia Zeani, her former student Marilyn Mims, and Marilyn's student (and daughter) Virginia Mims will demonstrate how the bel canto singing technique has been transmitted from teacher to student through several generations. Local Workshop Coordinator Lloyd Mims will moderate an open conversation between teachers, singers, and workshop participants as Virginia Zeani describes what she learned from her own teachers that she then successfully transmitted to her many students at Indiana University over a teaching career that spanned more than 20 years.
