Job Description / Duties

PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Provides keyboard-accompanying services for Scripps College Music Department and the Claremont Joint Music Program. Provides piano and harpsichord accompaniment during instruction, performances and special College events. This is a temporary assignment with an expected end date of May 11, 2016.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Accompany private voice lessons in the department, as well as their respective performance classes.
  • Accompany all rehearsals of the Chamber Choir on Mondays and Wednesdays 6:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.
  • Accompany junior, senior and graduate vocal/instrumental recitals.
  • Accompany students on student recitals.
  • Accompany faculty voice recitals and instrumentalist (“Friday at Noon” series) as arranged.
  • Serve as pianist for all college convocations and function as required.
  • Accompany voice juries, and voice auditions.
  • Accompany instrumental students and juries as arranged.
  • Active support for the College’s Principles of Community and Principles of Diversity in the performance of job duties.

Qualifications / Required Skills

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Skilled and highly competent as an accompanist – piano and harpsichord.
  • Requires high level of technical and musical skills.
  • Ability to understand meaning of musical terms, signs, and abbreviations, in popular, semi-classical and classical music.
  • Work effectively with instructional faculty and students.
  • Ability to follow a soloist or conductor in performing musical score.
  • Ability to play at sight, with accuracy and feeling.
  • Knowledge of IPA pronunciation of German, French, Italian, Spanish and Latin.



QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in Music, piano/keyboard performance/accompanying.

Demonstrated proficiency in piano, preferably as an accompanist and demonstrated communications skills and a commitment to providing excellent customer service is required.

HOURS & CLASSIFICATION AND STATUS:
This is a temporary, part-time, non-benefits eligible and non-exempt position. Hours and days of week may vary due to the needs of the students and College events.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
May supervise student workers.
