Bio: Tenor Geoffrey Friedley performs regularly throughout Idaho and beyond as a soloist in recital, oratorio, and opera. In May 2022, he performed the role of Don Basilio in a concert performance of Mozart's "Le nozze di Figaro" with Gemma Arts at the Romance Theater in Rexburg, ID. In March 2022, he collaborated with soprano Diana Livingston-Friedley and pianist Mark Neiwirth in a performance of works by Louise Talma, Benjamin Britten, Stephen Paulus, Hugo Wolf, and Libby Larsen for the Voices Unheard series at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Sun Valley. In December 2021, he was tenor soloist for Handel’s Messiah with Dr. Scott Anderson and the Idaho State-Civic Symphony. In September 2019, he and pianist Natalia Lauk performed songs and arias for the Idaho Hometown Heroes Celebration at the ISU Stephens Performing Arts Center. In August 2019, with soprano Livingston-Friedley, mezzo-soprano Lara Nie, baritone Raymond Feener, and pianists Natalia Rivera and R. L. Rowsey, he performed lieder by Schubert and Brahms "Neue Liebeslieder," Op. 65 for the Summer Music Institute of the Sun Valley Music Festival. In March 2019, with soprano Livingston-Friedley and pianist Neiwirth, he performed Hugo Wolf’s complete "Spanisches Liederbuch." In March 2018, he and pianist Kori Bond performed Franz Schubert’s "Winterreise" in ISU’s Goranson Recital Hall. In February 2017, he sang Ben in Menotti’s "The Telephone" with soprano Livingston-Friedley and pianist Neiwirth at Pocatello’s Old Town Actors Studio. In July 2016, he and guitarist Bill O’Brien presented songs by Joaquín Rodrigo and Heitor Villa-Lobos for the Summer Institute for Piano and Strings sponsored by the ISCS and the Idaho State University (ISU) School of Performing Arts. In April 2016, Friedley sang the role of the Israelitish Man in Handel's Judas Maccabaeus with Daniel Stern and the Boise Baroque Orchestra. In September 2015, he and Mark Neiwirth presented Francis Poulenc's Le travail du peintre (The Work of the Painter) at ISU. In July, with Livingston-Friedley and Neiwirth, he performed Hugo Wolf's "Italienisches Liederbuch" for the Sunday Sounds at Six Series in McCall, ID. Past performances include Elder Hayes in Floyd's "Susannah" (May 2013, Opera Idaho); Dr. Caius in "Falstaff" (April 2013, University of Utah); Little Bat and Elder Gleaton in Floyd's "Susannah" (May 2012, U of U); tenor solos in Herbert Howells' "Hymnus Paradisi" (February 2012, U of U), and Lucano and Valletto in Monteverdi's "L'incoronazione di Poppea" (May 2011, U of U). Friedley also premiered Sprag, the hero of Julian Livingston's new opera "Napa DeMonk, Queen of the Lost Waters of Mars" at the Bloomington Playwright's Project in Bloomington, Indiana (August 2010). Past oratorio performances include tenor arias in Bach’s "St. John Passion" with Daniel Stern and the Boise Baroque Orchestra, Puccini’s "Messa di Gloria" with Scott Anderson and the Camerata Singers at Idaho State University, the title role in Handel’s "Joshua" with Boise Baroque, Handel’s "Messiah" with George Adams and the Idaho Falls Symphony, Mozart’s Mass in C Minor with Dick Brown and the Caritas Chorale of Sun Valley, The Shepherd in Ottorino Respighi’s "Laud to the Nativity" with the IF Symphony, Mozart’s Requiem with Ted Kuchar and the Fresno Philharmonic, and Bach’s Magnificat in D with conductor Zvonimir Hacko, the LA Baroque Orchestra, and the St. Cecilia Society of Sacramento, CA. Past recitals include performances of “saucy songs” by Henry Purcell and P.D.Q. Bach as well as the plainchant of Hildegard of Bingen with Utopia Early Music in Salt Lake City. Friedley has performed Hugo Wolf's "Italienisches Liederbuch" across Southern Idaho with soprano Livingston-Friedley and pianist Neiwirth (October 2012) and at ISU and the U of U (March 2012) with pianist Jeffrey Price. Friedley and Livingston-Friedley performed selections from the American Songbook with pianist Camille Blackburn for "A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs," a touring exhibit of photographs celebrating David Lehman's book of the same name, hosted by ISU’s Eli Oboler Library (2011). Friedley portrays a raucous but loveable First Crapshooter on the Newport Classics CD of Lukas Foss’ "The Jumping Frog" (1997). Friedley is an Adjunct Instructor in Music at Idaho State University, where he teaches Voice and Music History. He holds degrees from Lawrence University, the Eastman School of Music, the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in New Jersey, and the University of Utah School of Music.
