Bio: Dr. Juan Héctor Pereira, Baritone, is a native of Santiago, Chile. Dr. Pereira recently completed his Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Voice and Opera from The University of Michigan. He currently holds an Assistant Professorship at the University of Texas at El Paso, teaching, Vocal Pedagogy, Song Literature, and Opera Workshop. Dr. Pereira also serves as instructor Prior to relocating to El Paso, Dr. Pereira held faculty positions at Adrian College, in Adrian, Michigan, and assistant and instructor positions at The University of Michigan. Dr. Pereira is an avid performer, director, pianist, and accompanist, having performed throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Italy, Finland, and Israel. Last fall, Dr. Pereira performed the title role in Michigan’s production of Don Giovanni. Dr. Pereira enjoyed covering the role of Papageno last summer with Opera Theatre Pittsburgh, and concertizing throughout Italy with The University of Cincinnati’s College Conservatory of Music the previous summer. More recently, Dr. Pereira completed his debut performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., reprising his role as the Don. Dr. Pereira has performed in a number of Operatic and Musical Theatre productions. As a soloist, he has performed with regional symphony orchestras, and presented at the International Vernacular Conference in Puebla, Mexico. Memorable roles include Lenski, Eugene Onegin, Ralph Rackstraw, HMS Pinafore, Tateh, Ragtime, Eisenstein, Die Fledermaus, and of course, Giovanni. At the University of Michigan, Dr. Pereira assisted with the major University Productions serving as Assistant Director for Verdi's Falstaff, Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, and Argento's Postcard from Morocco. He also prepared scenes from The Magic Flute, La Boheme, Die Fledermaus, and Glucks, Orfeo as coach and accompanist. Dr. Pereira recently successfully directed and produced the graduate-student production of The Rape of Lucretia, by Benjamin Britten. Teaching and work-shopping is a passion of his, as he attempts to make young vocalists more effective singing-actors. Dr. Pereira is working towards future interests and certifications, among them a focus in the Michael Chekhov Acting Technique. Dr. Pereira is currently serving as Chorus-master for El Paso Opera, and still manages to find time to instruct and coach aspiring young musicians at the El Paso Conservatory of Music. Dr. Pereira has held a private vocal studio for the last 12 years, and enjoys frequent participation adjudicating at song festivals and Allstate competitions, subbing as church music director, organist, and as a community coach/accompanist. Dr. Pereira will be premiering an orchestral song cycle by composer/musician/colleague Dr. Eric Hanson, with the orchestra at UTEP in honor of black history month.
