Title: Professor of Voice

Bio: Born in Greencreek, Idaho, soprano Jill Terhaar Lewis is a tenured Professor of Vocal Music and the Chair of Vocal Programs at Charleston Southern University and a respected performer in the Southeast Region. Known for her beautiful, rich tone and her ability to adapt to different styles and genres, including classical and crossover jazz and folk fusion with classical music. She has performed as soloist with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Charleston Jazz Orchestra, and recently with the Lowcountry Voices and Charlton Singleton Ensemble in the Duke Ellington Sacred Concerts as part of the MOJA Festival. She has also been a guest artist for the Baker and Baker Recital Series at the Columbia Museum of Art, the Women & Concert Series (Rolling Stones), and The Hi Harmony concert, and is a recurring featured soloist in the Piccolo Spoleto Festival including several Spotlight Concerts with Piccolo Spoleto Festival Orchestra. She also has been working on crossover projects and recitals with her husband, jazz musician Robert Lewis and pianist Gerald Gregory in their ensemble, The In-Between. The three have released multiple albums together of original compositions and arrangements. In her community, she is co-artistic director of the St. John the Beloved Concert Series in Summerville. She is a founder of Contemporary Collaborations, along with composers Trevor Weston and later Yiorgos Vassilandonakis, a new music project for students. She has served as co-chair for the Charleston Jazz Festival, vocal consultant for the Charleston Jazz Orchestra, and has worked as a clinician and presenter for Charleston Jazz. Dr. Lewis is a co-founder of the Empathy Project with Dr. Jennifer Whipple, MT-BC and Maurice Burgess. A member of NATS since 2001, Dr. Lewis has long been of service to her chapter, region, and nationally. She is the current Governor of the Mid-Atlantic Region. She has also been appointed to national NATS committees: the NATS Mentoring Initiative Committee, the NATS Education Committee, which evolved and helped develop the NATS Advocacy Committee, of which she is also a member.
