Bio:

Mezzo-Soprano Deanne Meek is widely recognized as one of the most versatile and dynamic artists in the opera world today, singing role highlights with the Metropolitan, New York City, Washington and Los Angeles opera companies, and internationally with La Monnaie, Brussels; Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires; Teatro Real, Madrid; Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona; Le Chatelet, Paris; Opera National du Rhin, Strasbourg; Opera de Lyon, Opera North and English National Opera, UK and Teatro alla Scala, Milan.

Repertoire for the mezzo ranges from Strauss (Octavian/Der Rosenkavalier, Herodias/Salome and Komponist /Ariadne auf Naxos) to Cherubino, Dorabella, Despina, Zerlina and Donna Elvira in the Mozart operas. Early music highlights include Nerone and Ottavia in Monteverdi’s L’Incoronation di Poppea; Dido in Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas; and in Handel, Ruggiero/Alcina, Zenobia/Radamisto, Dejanira/Hercules, Rinaldo, and both Sesto and the title role in Giulio Cesare. Contemporary works include the title role in Mark Blitzstein’s Regina; Charlotte in the acclaimed Paris premier of Sondheim’s A Little Night Music; Jo in Little Women by Mark Adamo; Hermia in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (recorded on DVD for Virgin Records) and creation of the role of Ma Joad in the world premier of The Grapes of Wrath by Ricky Ian Gordon, recorded for PS Classics. Recent additions to the Mezzo’s roles include Mrs. DeRocher in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking, (Lyric Opera of Chicago), Older Woman in Flight by Jonathan Dove (Des Moines Metro, Minnesota, Utah and The Dallas Opera companies.) An upcoming role and house debut includes Berta in Rossini's The Barber of Seville with Seattle Opera. Concert highlights include The Jerusalem, Seattle and American Symphony Orchestras, The Luxembourg Philharmonic, and recordings with the Boston Baroque ensemble. Festival credits include Spoleto Festival USA, Bard Music, Opera Theater of St. Louis, Grange Park, UK, fellowships with the Tanglewood and Ravinia Festivals, and summers with the renowned Bregenzer Festspiele, Austria. Ms. Meek has presented recitals at the Frye Museum in Seattle, WA and recently sang the world premier of “Algebra of Night” by composer Eugene O’Brien with the 21st Century Consort at the Smithsonian American Museum of Art in Washington D.C., returning to perform works by Stephen Jaffe and Nicholas Maw in subsequent performances with the ensemble. Other premiers include Beauty Intolerable by Sheila Silver on poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Ophelia Songs for mezzo and string quartet by violinist and composer Eugene Drucker. Ms. Meek holds undergraduate degrees in Philosophy from Whitman College and Voice from Peabody Institute of Music, Johns Hopkins University, and an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College. She is a certified teacher of yoga, Gyrokinesis® and Gyrotonic®, The Alexander Technique and the Fitzmaurice Voicework®, and has extensive experience in multiple forms of somatic movement education, physical theatre, as a guide in Inner Relationship Focusing (IRF) and as a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP). A NCVS trained Vocologist, she previously served on the voice faculty of the University of Washington, where she also stage directed and oversaw the Vocal Theatre Works program. She currently serves as Visiting Associate Professor of Music in Voice with the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, Bloomington. The mezzo continues to teach private voice, movement and somatic practices online and in person in New York City and in her native Pacific Northwest, offering workshops and master classes world-wide.
