Gustavo Ahualli, baritone Biography Hailed for his rich and powerful baritone, Mr. Gustavo Ahualli has become well known for his dramatic portrayals in a myriad of leading roles of standard operatic repertoire as well as new works by contemporary composers. The Houston Press extolled, “As Macbeth, Argentinean baritone, Gustavo Ahualli proved he has an ideal voice for Verdi, beautiful, full, rich, and powerful. His singing was effortless, with excellent control, and ripe with machismo.”

Mr. Ahualli has over 48 roles under his belt including Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Alfonso Xl in La Favorita, Belcore in L’Elisir d’amore, Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Silvio and Tonio in I Pagliacci, Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana, Germont in La Traviata, Posa in Don Carlo, Count di Luna in Il Trovatore, title roles in Macbeth, Nabucco and Rigoletto, Renato in Un ballo in maschera, Scarpia in Tosca, Michele in Il Tabarro, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Frank in Edgar, Marcello in La Bohème, Ping in Turandot, Figaro and Conte in Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Leporello and Masetto in Don Giovanni, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Escamillo in Carmen, Albert in Werther, Creon in Medée by Milhaud, Onegin in Eugene Onegin, and Tony Esposito in The Most Happy Fella. Since his debut in the role of Papageno in Die Zauberflöte with Teatro San Martin in his native Tucuman, Argentina, Mr. Ahualli has sung regularly at at the iconic Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires as well as other Argentinean venues such as Teatro Argentino de La Plata, Teatro Avenida for Buenos Aires Lírica and many others. In the United States he has sung with the Palm Beach Opera, Sarasota Opera, Central City Opera, Baltimore Concert Opera, Opera in the Heights in Houston TX, the New York Opera Society, Wichita Grand Opera, New Rochelle Opera, Opera Company of Brooklyn, NY Lyric Opera Theatre, New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera, New Jersey Little Opera Company, The Raylynmor Opera, Union Avenue Opera Theatre, Vertical Players Repertory, Opera of the Hamptons, and the Choral Society NYC, etc.

Recent performances include, Germont in La Traviata, Alfonso Xl in La Favorita, I Pagliacci next to Jose Cura at Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, Operatic Recital next to Aprile Millo in Canada and recital tour next to Arianna Zuckerman. Gustavo Ahualli was born in San Miguel de Tucuman, Argentina. He began his musical training at age of seven with Hilda Deniflee, a student of Kodály and Bartók. He has a bachelors in music from UNA- Universidad de las Artes-Buenos Aires and a Master in Vocal Performance from ISA-Instituto Superior de Arte del Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Upon moving to the United States in March 2000, he was named first-prize winner of the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera Competition. While in New York City he served as a bilingual cantor for Saint Patrick’s Cathedral and for the Sacred Heart Cathedral Basilica in Newark, NJ. Mr. Ahualli is an AGMA member and currently lives in Washington, D.C. where he serves on the voice faculty at the Rome School of Music, Drama And Art and is the Director for the Latin American Music Center for graduate studies for the same institution.
