Bio:

Deborah Saverance, soprano, formerly a busy member of The Grammy Award winning Metropolitan Opera Chorus Ensemble since 1988, also made her Metropolitan Opera solo debut as The Milliner in Der Rosenkavalier with Carlos Kleiber conducting and performed in the Met’s productions of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger as An Apprentice under the baton of James Levine, and again as an Orphan in Der Rosenkavalier. She was also a member of The New York City Opera Chorus prior to The Met.

Ms. Saverance has shown her versatility as a singing actress in the variety of roles performed across the country, including Lucia, Pamina, Fiordiligi, and Musetta. Gilda in Rigoletto, Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus, Fiordiligi in Cosi FanTutte, Suor Angelica in Suor Angelica, and Susanna in Figaro. For the New York City Opera she performed roles as diverse as Behketaten in Philip Glass’s Ahknaten, and Yvette in the Live from Lincoln Center production of Puccini’s Rondine. She has performed with the New Jersey State Opera, Connecticut Opera, New York City Opera in the Schools, Augusta Opera and Aspen Music Festival. In 2003, at the New York Historical Society, she sang the US Premiere of Dreamland Opus 42 by Andrew Downes written for Soprano and Soprano saxophone.* where Time Out New York wrote: ‘The most striking examples of otherworldliness were in Andrew Downes’ Dream-Land (US premier), sung by Deborah Saverance. Deborah also appeared at The Museum of the City of New York in 2000 to commemorate the anniversary of soprano, Jenny Lind’s first historic New York concert, singing portions of Miss Lind’s original repertoire.

Ms. Saverance often performs to benefit charitable organizations, The Cameron Players, The Orangeburg Free Medical Clinic, The Elloree Heritage Museum, and raising $10,000 for Parkinson’s Awareness Month at The Tryon Arts Center, NC. Other endeavors included Midnight Run which feeds the homeless in NYC, Habitat for Humanity in New Jersey, and the Eastside Park Neighborhood Association of Paterson, NJ where she and husband Daniel received the prestigious Ritvo Award for community service.

She is a graduate of the Music Program at Augusta State University (formerly Augusta College) where she studied with Roy Delp and received a BA in Music Education. Ms. Saverance had extended opera study at Shorter College, Rome, GA and Converse College and the Aspen Music Festival. Katherine Keyes , mezzo soprano of New York is Deborah’s present teacher, whom she has studied with for over 25 years . Her coaches include Jerry Brown, Dan Smith, Wayne Sanders and the late Alberta Masiello. Deborah is also a continuing student of The Alexander Technique.

After 23 years with The Metropolitan Opera, she has settled near family in Santee, SC with husband Daniel and their furry children Bella, Jingles, Trixter and Runting. Locally she has served as Co-Chair on the Orangeburg Fine Arts Council and has performed at the opening of The Elloree Teapot Museum, The Elloree Trials, and recitaled at The Orangeburg Fine Arts Center and The Elloree Historical Museum. Deborah prepared the leads and chorus for The Cameron Player’s productions of Oklahoma, The Butler Did It Singing, Annie, Annie Get Your Gun and The Sound of Music. She has taught at Claflin University for six years as a Vocal Professor. She also maintains her Voice Studio and continues to perform. *The US premiere was given on 2nd November 2003 in New York by New York Metropolitan Opera soprano, Deborah Saverance, with Paul Cohen, saxophone, and David Maiullo, piano, in a concert entitled ‘Poe as Parlor Music’, in honor of the publication of Edgar Allan Poe - Poems and Poetics by the Library of America, produced by the New York Literary Roundtable for the New York Historical Society and presented by Time Out New York…"these two pieces, in their emotionally astute and beautifully sung arrangements, took Poe’s words far into the realm of the spirit."
