I L C A L Ó P E Z Mezzosoprano

Born in San Juan, mezzo soprano Ilca López obtained her Bachelor in Arts at the University of Puerto Rico and her Master in Music degree in Vocal Performance at the New England Conservatory. She began her professional singing career in Buenos Aires, Argentina. With an engagement at the famous Teatro Colón, she performed a great variety of roles during her five years residence there. The mezzosoprano then traveled to Europe and after performing concerts and operas in Spain, she established residency in Germany where she became a member of the ensemble at the Stadttherater Würzburg. She also was a guest artist in other German, Austrian, Swiss and French cities as well, including theaters in Hanover, Munich, Passau, Regensburg, Klagenfurt, Zürich and Paris, among others. In the States she has performed at the Carnegie Hall and given concerts in California.

Her operatic repertoire includes the leading roles in Così fan tutte, Les conte d’Hoffmann, Don Giovanni, Der Rosenkavaier, Ariadne auf Naxos, Il Barbiere de Siviglia, Il turco in Italia, Hansel & Gretel, Orfeo ed Euridice, Le nozze di Figaro, The Cunning Little Vixen, La finta giardiniera, Suor Angelica, to name a few. She has played an outstanding Carmen throughout Germany and Argentina, where critics have repeatedly acclaimed her as “the perfect singing actress with a brilliant and flexible voice”.

In addition to maintaining an active operatic career, she continues to cultivate her love for singing recitals, in which she expands a vast and treasured repertoire of art songs and chamber music, encompassing the Baroque through modern music eras. Several Puerto Rican composers have dedicated works to her. She is a frequent artist with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra. Ms López also has three compact discs of art songs.

Presently, after nearly fifteen years of international performing activities, she has established herself in her native Puerto Rico, where she is the Director of the Voice Department at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico and directs its Opera Workshop. Her works as director include, Gianni Schicchi, Orfeo ed Euridice, The Old Maid and the Thief, The Telephone, Il Matrimonio segreto, L’amico Fritz, Hansel and Gretel, A Hand of Bridge, Hin und zurück, The Threepenny Opera, Bastien and Bastienne, The Empresario, The Turn of the Screw, Der Kaiser von Atlantis, La tragédie de Carmen, Docteur Miracle, L’heure espagnol, Albert Herring, La voix humaine, Così fan tutte and numerous opera scenes.

Her book Dicción para cantantes, is the textbook for her Diction Classes and it is an approach to the International Phonetic Alphabet to the Spanish speaking voice students. It will be published in the following months.

Ms. López has given Master classes and conferences in Cuba, Mexico, Dominican Republic, República del Salvador, USA, and other universities in her native Puerto Rico. Her work has been acknowledged by the Puerto Rico’s House of Representative and other Puerto Rican institutions.
