Kyra C. Humphrey

Style: Pop; Opera; Folk; Gospel; Rock; Classical; Musical Theatre

Bio: Kyra is a Washington native, born in Spokane, where she attended Gonzaga University. She continued her education at the University of Washington, where she completed her M.M. in Vocal Performance in 1983. She was on the voice faculty at Northwest College in Kirkland, maintained a full-time private vocal studio in Seattle, performed regularly as a soloist with Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Seattle Choral Company, and was director of contemporary music at St. Monica Catholic Church on Mercer Island. Relocating with her husband Steven to Pasadena CA in 1987, she re-established her vocal studio and joined the Los Angeles Master Chorale as a professional chorister in 1989. Her students perform throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties, and include Los Angeles Music Center Awards semi-finalists and winners; members and soloists with the adult choruses Pasadena Pro Musica, Towne Singers, Los Robles Master Chorale and Long Beach Camerata Singers; and Los Angeles Children’s Chorus Chamber Singers and Young Men’s Ensemble. Kyra moved to Sequim in 2012, and is now giving private lessons as she did in Seattle and Pasadena. In addition to her teaching, she continues her performing career, most recently as a soloist with the Sequim Community Christmas Chorus (December, 2019), with Peninsula Singers (April 2015), and as “Suzy” in the Reader’s Theatre Plus production of The Winter Wonderettes (November, 2013) Kyra also is a frequent vocal coach for musical theater productions at Olympic Theatre Arts, Sequim's community theater company. An accomplished vocal technician with 45 years teaching experience, Kyra’s approach to vocal instruction is grounded in the confirmed belief that almost any voice can improve and that the process of improvement should be joyful and satisfying. A firm classical foundation in placement, breath control, and support results in increased range and flexibility and development of tonal color and dynamic nuance, strengthening and making more exciting any vocal style, whether it be opera, art song, music theater, folk, pop or standards.
