Title: Voice Instructor

Bio: Maria Damore is a private voice teacher from Berks County, PA, and serves as associate faculty for the LoVetri Institute for Somatic VoiceworkTM, in residence each summer at Baldwin Wallace University Community Arts School. Because singing is a physical skill just like playing soccer, the violin, or dancing, Maria works with students functionally to help them develop a strong, flexible, and balanced voice with greater range and freedom to express. The first half of the lesson includes exercises for strength and flexibility, postural alignment, breathing, kinesthetic awareness, and problem solving of functional issues. Repertoire is covered in the second half of the lesson. Work and may also address the speaking voice, basic music reading, and microphone technique. As an active performer dealing with the myriad of variables and situations that can affect singing and performance, Maria is well-qualified to teach, guide, and problem solve with singers in the various situations they may encounter while performing. The 2022 recipient of the Frank Scott award for contributions to Berks County’s Jazz Heritage, Maria has been an educator for Olivet Boys & Girls Club, adjudicator for vocal competitions, and clinician for GetJazzED Berks-Vocal Day. She has been featured in Classical Singer magazine, discussing her work in the original children’s jazz-opera, The Bear Prince, and her Greek folk music duo “Stavros & Maria.” Known as a versatile singer who easily crosses genres, Maria was thrilled to compete as a quarterfinalist in the 2018 American Traditions Vocal Competition in Savannah, Georgia. Maria has performed in various shows, ensembles, and as a soloist for churches, orchestras, and social groups for many years. Favorite roles include Mother/Witch in the opera Hansel and Gretel, Mercedes in Carmen, Eva Peron in Evita, Lily in The Secret Garden, Grizabella in Cats, Aldonza in Man of La Mancha, and the Beggar Woman in Sweeney Todd. Be sure to listen to Maria’s jazz-flavored CD, “Moonglow,” and single, “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan. Maria holds a BA in English and Psychology, and MS in Administration, as well as graduate credit in Vocal Pedagogy. She has studied most recently with Toni Marie Palmertree, Tamara Black, and Jeannette LoVetri. For more information about Maria’s performing and teaching, visit www.mariadamore.com.
