Bio:

Teaching: I focus on achieving vocal freedom through relaxation, body awareness, body connection and body alignment. I have 15+ years experience working with students of all levels and ages, from absolute beginner to Graduate level, in all genres of music. Mezzo-Soprano, Maria Caughey is a versatile artist who is gaining renown in theaters and concerts halls not only for her rich, telling voice, musical sensitivity and expression but also for her electric stage presence as a fearless performer. Most recently she was the cover for Donna Elvira with San Diego Opera's 2024 production of Don Giovanni as well as recitals and outreach for SDO, since she arrived in San Diego in 2020.

To the delight of audiences some of Maria’s favorite roles have been Hansel, "Hansel and Gretel", the title role in "Cendrillon", Komponist "Ariadne auf Naxos", title role in Iolanthe, Cherubino "Le Nozze di Figaro", La Principessa "Suor Angelica" , Zita, "Gianni Schicchi", Rosina "Il Barbiere Sivigilia" and The Beggar Woman and Pirelli in "Sweeney Todd". As a mezzo, Maria has had the opportunity to tackle several trouser roles but she was the first to perform Friedrich Bhaer in Adamo’s "Little Women", typically a baritone, as a britches role, with the Intermezzo YAP. Opera News noted that she “fleshed out her role tellingly” in her debut with Washington National Opera as Kätchen in Werther. Her current repertoire specializes in the works of Wagner, Verdi and Verismo. Also at home as a concert artist, recent engagements include the Mezzo Soloist in Verdi Requiem and Mozart Requiem. A highlight in the realm of Opera Concert Repertoire was performing the role of Schwertleite in "Die Walküre" at the Meyerhoff Symphony hall with Christine Brewer and James Morris. Other noteworthy works performed included the Duruflé "Requiem", Rossini’s "Petite Messe Solennelle", Vivaldi’s "Gloria", "Neue Liebeslieder Walzer" Brahms and Handel’s "Messiah".

As a strong advocate for Music Education, a highlight was performing on a lecture recital series at the Kreeger Gallery in Washington D.C. on Impressionism in Art and Music.  Maria was thrilled to be nominated for "Teacher of the Year" for Anne Arundel County Public Schools where she began her career as an Educator of General Music and Chorus(K-12). From 2012-2018 she was on the Faculty of Levine Music, a community based Conservatory in the Washington D.C./Metropolitan area teaching private voice. As a voice teacher, her students have won numerous Vocal Competitions and Voice Scholarships.
