Bio:

Christy Derksen, mezzo-soprano, holds a MMus from University of Western Ontario and a BMus from Western Washington University. Her passion is displayed as a performer, educator, and vocal coach. Ms. Derksen has won numerous vocal competitions and awards including the prestigious Alberta Foundation for the Arts Grant. In the west, Ms.Derksen has been heard in Vancouver's Sing Along Messiah, Wagmanite in Calgary Opera's premier of Frobisher, soloist with Pro Coro in Rachmaninoff's All Night Vigil, Haydn's Harmoniemesse and Ralph Vaughn Williams Mass in G minor. In the east, she appeared as “Maid of Honor” in Les Huguenots, and “Imelda” in Oberto with Toronto Opera in Concert as well as “Suzanne” in the Canadian premier of La Mère Coupable for Summer Opera Lyric Theatre. In London, Ontario she performed in Guilio Cesare in Egitto under conductor Timothy Vernon for the role of “Nireno” and then as “Sesto” in Italy!

Most recently, Ms. Derksen has performed with Masterworks Oakville in Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Hamilton's Symphony on the Bay for Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, “Dorabella” in Cosi fan Tutte with Ottawa's Capital City Opera, “Flora” in FAWN's Canadian premier of Cryptomnesia and “Mother” in Hansel and Gretel at the Burlington Performing Art Centre. Ms. Derksen has previously taught at Redeemer University (Ancaster ON), Rocky Mountain College (Calgary AB), Columbia Bible College (Abbotsford BC), and Northwest Baptist College (Langley BC), Chilliwack Academy of Music (Chilliwack BC), Central Valley Academy of Music (Abbotsford BC). Currently she instructs voice at Trinity Western University.

Notably, Ms. Derksen was one of the founding instructors for Chilliwack School of Performing Arts, enjoying 3 seasons preparing Annie & the Music Man. In Summer 2019, she was invited to teach a MasterClass with Vancouver’s Theatre Under The Stars.

Ms.Derksen has been teaching at Trinity Western University since Spring of 2018.
