Bio: Laura Shepherd is a proud voice teacher with a lively studio comprised of young people and adults studying musical theater, pop, jazz and classical music. She enjoys helping students at all levels discover and share their voices, focusing on healthy technique across registers and using acting choices to influence singing choices. Laura is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), Puget Sound and Tahoma Chapters, and the South King County Music Teachers Association (MTNA). A life-long singer, Laura has pursued choral, folk, musical theater, barbershop, and jazz performance. Teaching has always been her passion, and she holds a Music Teaching Certificate in Washington state. After teaching and directing theater and musical theater in the greater Seattle area since 2001, Laura decided to devote all her attention to teaching singing in 2015. She holds degrees in Theatre and Music Education from Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music, and a Master’s degree in Educational Theatre from New York University. Laura’s students have earned recognition through the NATS Student Auditions, 5th Avenue High School Musical Theater Awards, Hal Leonard Vocal Competition, Schmidt Vocal Competition, International Youth Music Competition, CS Music Vocal Competition, and Performing Arts Festival Eastside, among others. They have performed locally at the 5th Avenue Theatre, ACT Theatre, Village Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre, Book-it Repertory Theatre, SecondStory Repertory, Renton Civic Theater, and many others. Laura’s love of learning has led her to attend numerous workshops and conferences, including the Bel Canto Can Belto Voice Pedagogy Intensive through Penn State University. Before deciding to teach singing full time, she taught, directed, and managed youth theater programs as the Education Director at Studio East. She has also taught drama and social skills through the arts for Youth Theater Northwest, Dandylyon Drama, Book-It Repertory Theater, and Tacoma Arts Live, and she co-founded the SEL organization Creative Resilience. Laura joyfully sings soprano with the Seattle Symphony Chorale and is a former member of BlueStreet Jazz Voices and StoryBook Theater.
