Bio:

Voice lessons are focused on building a strong technical foundation. The work is rigorous and individualized to improve resonance, strength, and confidence, while relaxing tensions. I develop a deeply supportive relationship with each student, fostering trust to move through difficult physical and emotional work. I am detail oriented, yet playful and fun in tackling technical challenges. We attend to musical expression, interpretation, and acting. I use the Kodaly Method to teach sight singing for those who need to improve reading skills. Voice students have performed lead and supporting roles in local musical theatre productions, such as the Star Theatre , Coast Kids Theatre, North County School of the Arts, and solos with the La Jolla Symphony & Chorus, Orchestra Nova, community events, schools, churches, rock, country, and Irish bands. Some have won vocal competitions, such as the Southwest Regional Jimmy Musical Theatre Competition and progression to Hollywood Week with American Idol. Many have been accepted at leading universities such as USC in voice performance, some with merit scholarships, as well as musical theatre, music composition, screen acting, and music therapy.

As a soprano soloist, I have performed with the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus, the Palomar Orchestra and Chorale, the Mendocino Music Festival, and others. I have held positions as Staff Singer with the La Jolla Symphony Chorus and Soprano Soloist at the Congregational church of La Jolla. I enjoy creating original collaborative recitals, such as “Back on the Psychiatrist’s Couch”, featuring an original dramatic and comedic story told through classical vocal literature. My voice teachers have been Ann Chase, Virginia Sublett, Sarah Agler, and coach, Ines Irawati.

I hold a post-graduate certification in Kodaly Music education, and a BA with a minor in music. Prior to my teaching and singing career, I received a Master of Social Work degree and worked as a psychotherapist for 10 years. Additional work in music has included choral directing with San Diego North Coast Singers, Encinitas Union School District, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Dieguito, and currently serving at San Marcos Lutheran Church. I am accompanist for the Palomar Chamber Singers at Palomar College, Musicianship Coordinator for San Diego North Coast Singers, and Substitute Music Teacher at Pacific Ridge School. http://chrislehman8.wix.com/lehmanvoiceandpiano
