Title: Associate Professor of Voice, Performance Chair
Bio: A Fulbright scholar in Paris, coloratura soprano Laura Hynes spent six years abroad in France and Germany, performing repertoire ranging from baroque opera with Les Arts Florissants to "classical cabaret" on French television and radio. She has performed opera roles, solo recitals, and concerts throughout Europe, the US, and Canada, in venues including New York's Alice Tully Hall, the Barbican in London, the Châtelet, Opéra Comique and the Cité de la Musique in Paris, Opéra de Marseille, Opéra de Montpellier, as well as major venues in Seville, Brussels, Madrid, Lisbon, Frankfurt, and more.
In 2015, Hynes joined the performing arts faculty at the University of Calgary, where she is currently Performance Chair and an associate professor of voice. Her research focuses on innovation in art song recital through social justice issues ("Raise Your Voice"), transgender voice transition ("Key of T", research-creation project funded by SSHRC), and collaborative performance creation. She is also currently enrolled in the 1600-hour Alexander Technique teacher training program at the Balance Arts Center in New York City.
She holds degrees from the University of Minnesota (D.M.A.) where she was the Carolyn Bailey & Dominick Argento Fellow, the Paris Conservatory (Cycle de perfectionnement), the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (M.M.), and Miami University (B.M.). She was a NATS intern in 2014, and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Murray State University during the 2014-2015 academic year.
