Title: Erin G. McCarthy Vocal Studio

Bio:

A native of the Pacific Northwest, soprano Erin McCarthy is a passionate performer who brings a steely, soaring voice and “elegant, sparkling” (Willamette Week, 2003) presence to the concert, opera, and recital stage.

Her training includes vocal study with Ruth Dobson at Portland State University and Patricia Craig in Boston, as well as coaching work with Richard Bower and composer Jeffrey Brody. During her time at PSU, Erin worked with legendary opera stars Sherrill Milnes, Ellen Faull, and Marilyn Horne.

Erin has appeared as a concert soloist and in fully-staged operas with Longwood Opera, MassTheatrica, Bel Canto Northwest, the Salem Philharmonic, the Braintree Chorale and Nashoba Valley Chorale, the Paul Madore Chorale, and the Masterworks Chorale. Some of her favorite operatic roles performed include Mimi in Puccini’s La Boheme, Mother in Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors, Donna Anna in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Alice Ford in Verdi’s Falstaff, First Lady and Queen of the Night in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and the title role in Puccini’s Suor Angelica. Her best-loved concert appearances include singing the soprano solos in the Brahms Requiem, the Verdi Requiem, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and Carmina Burana.

For three consecutive years Erin was a member of the International Bachakademie Stuttgart Festivalensemble, with whom she performed under the baton of acclaimed conductor Helmuth Rilling at venues as diverse as the European Musicfest Stuttgart, the Rheingau Musik Festival, and as part of a performance series at the Herodes Atticus theater at the Acropolis in Athens. She has been honored with awards by the Gibner King Vocal Competition (2001) and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (2001, 2005). In 2007, Erin presented a full recital in Weymouth, MA that included operatic arias, art songs, as well as a pair of original works by Jeffrey Brody. Erin appeared on the original CD recording of Mr. Brody’s compositions later that same year. Upcoming 2013 engagements include recitals in Hillsboro and Portland and being the featured “master” in a masterclass at Linnfield College.

Other ventures include concert work with jazz bands, burlesque troupes, barbershop quartets, and creative chamber collaborations. In addition to these musical endeavors, Erin is an accomplished equestrian who enjoys hanging out with alpacas and horses alike on Fermata Farm in the heart of Oregon wine country.
