Before coming to Seattle to teach vocal music, Mrs. Pumphrey was a symphony musician in Los Angeles, taught flute at Azusa Pacific University, as well as taught voice and flute at her own studio. Her vocal groups have been chosen to sing at the International Association of Jazz Educators Convention, the Washington Music Educators Convention and the American Choral Directors Association Convention. She has also been a clinician at both the WMEA and ACDA conventions, as well as at jazz festivals. Darla directs several programs through her studio including Summer Vocal Jazz and Musical Theatre Workshops. Student accomplishments include: NATS wins/places in District, Regionals and Nationals-Musical Theatre, Classical and in District for the new CMM category, Musical Theatre International Thespians-IE, Several Seattle-Kobe Sister City Association HS Vocal Jazz Winners, 5th Avenue HS Musical Theatre Actress Nominee, Wins/Places Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Baritone-District Solo/Ensemble-Classical, College Prep Program-Complete prep to send students to top University music programs, Jazz Forward Competition Finalist, KPLU Studio Session-Student Feature, HS Vocal Jazz Solo- DOWNBEAT Winner, MS Vocal Jazz Solo-DOWNBEAT Winner, Several Finalists-Jazz Forward Competition-Portland, Numerous students in WMEA & ACDA Honor Groups-Jazz/Classical Numerous students in school/community Musical Theatre Productions Mrs. Pumphrey is a member of WMEA, ACDA and NATS.
