Title: Voice Teacher and Soprano

Bio:

Nancy attended LSU and studied voice with Robert Grayson, Patricia O'Neil and Sandra Kungle. She has performed in musical theatre and opera productions in Baton Rouge with Baton Rouge Opera, The Little Theatre (Theatre Baton Rouge now), Baton Rouge Dinner theatre as well as New York City. Nancy Hendrick graduated from Manhattan School of Music where she studied with world renowned mezzo soprano, Mignon Dunn. Other notable teachers she studied with in New York are Leyna Gabriele, Shirlee Emmons and David Jones and Neal Goren. After graduating from MSM, Ms. Hendrick spent the next 8 years performing and teaching in New York City. Notable roles Ms. Hendrick sang are Despina in Cosi fan Tutte, Oscar in Un Ballo in Maschera, Susannah in Le Nozze Di Figaro and Musetta in La Boheme, Nannetta in Falstaff, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi and Laetitia in The Old Man and the Thief.

Nancy met her husband Michael while singing together in Tchaikovsky's opera Yolanta. They married a year later and 11 months later their son George was born in Chicago while Michael was performing with Lyric Opera of Chicago. Nancy and George joined Michael for the next 6 years traveling with him as he performed leading roles in the US with The Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Santa Fe Opera and Washington National Opera where he won artist of the year with the company. International engagements brought them to Germany, France, Brazil, Russia, Switzerland, London and Amsterdam attending the rehearsals and performances Michael was involved in. Michael just finished his doctorate in vocal performance and vocal pedagogy in 2021 at LSU with a 4.0 and I am super proud of him! (Vocal pedagogy is the study of the art and science of voice instruction.)

I believe in teaching a classical, healthy vocal technique with my students. This does not happen overnight, but it is well worth the time spent. This avoids the problems of young children belting too early and developing vocal problems such as hoarseness, laryngitis, vocal fatigue and possibly vocal nodules. Once their technique is correct and secure, we move into different styles of music, (musical theatre, jazz, opera, pop etc.) Because of the limited time I have available I do not advertise on facebook, instagram etc. for students. All my students come from word of mouth or from the NATS website. I would be happy to put you in touch with some very happy parents and students. My students have been winners in NATS competitions, the Hal Leonard Competition. They have sung leading roles at TBR, CCT and CYT as well as leading roles in productions with their respective college music programs.

Previous students have been accepted to music program such as Oklahoma City, Mannes, Manhattan School of Music, Yale and LSU.

Nancy Hendrick was a first place winner in the Regional NATS competition two years in a row (both in classical and musical theatre) and was a Metropolitan Opera Regional Council Audition Finalist and the winner of the New Orleans Philharmonic competition. Ms. Hendrick has 23 years experience teaching voice both in Baton Rouge and in New York City. She currently teaches vocal music to 7th-12th graders at Sequitur Classical Academy in addition to teaching her 21 private students. She can be heard as a cantor at St. Thomas More and St. Agnes.
