Title: Voice Teacher & Breathing Coach
Bio: Lesley Findlay is a Montreal singing teacher, breath coach, and pedagogue who has spent almost five decades studying the intricacies of human voice and the breath that supports it. Her passion for the vocal mechanism led her to analyze the vocal prowess of world-class singers, particularly Montserrat Caballé. Her efforts to understand the mechanics behind the breath control, vocal freedom, and pianissimo high notes of “La Superba” helped shape many of the ideas she teaches today. Findlay’s training began in Vancouver with Nona Mari (private voice), who introduced her to bel canto and back-breathing. Formal studies followed, first as a mezzo-soprano under Dr. Jacob Hamm of Bellingham, WA (DipMus at VCC) and Mary Morrison (BMusPerf at UofT), then as a soprano with Lucile Evans (ConcDip at McGill), Jane Randolph (private voice), and Prof Jan Simons (private voice). At McGill she sang Dvořák’s Rusalka, winning the Opera Prize. Known for her practical approach to breathing and vocal mechanics, Lesley helps singers understand what to do and why it works. Her teaching emphasizes clear explanations, efficient vocal production, and healthy, sustainable technique across all musical styles. She is the author of the forthcoming book The Secret to Breathing Lies in Your Back.
