Job Description / Duties

Interlochen Arts Academy seeks a dynamic voice instructor for the theatre department who is interested in contributing to a vibrant program dedicated to the overall development of the contemporary musical theatre vocalist. The ideal candidate will have a broad and thorough knowledge of musical theatre repertoire appropriate to both developing and pre-professional artists, a sustained professional career as a vocalist, and prior academic experience in teaching stage-centric skills to singers. This is a nine-month position that serves as a key vocal coach for the students in the musical theatre track of the theatre department. This position shares responsibility for the vocal development and health of the musical theatre students.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
* Develop comprehensive, age-appropriate, and skill-level-specific curriculum for musical theatre voice instruction, ensuring alignment with Interlochen's educational standards and objectives
* Provide personalized instruction in private voice lessons offering guidance in vocal technique, repertoire selection, interpretation, and performance skills development
* Lead engaging and interactive group vocal classes for students in the musical theatre program, focusing on vocal technique, ensemble singing, harmonization, and performance skills in a collaborative setting
* Offer expert vocal coaching and guidance for musical theatre productions, assisting students in refining vocal technique, interpretation, character development, and vocal health throughout the rehearsal and performance process
* Serve as a mentor to young artists in the musical theatre program, providing personalized guidance, support, and encouragement to help students navigate their artistic journey, develop confidence, set goals, and reach their full potential as performers and individuals
* Actively participate in weekly departmental meetings to collaborate with colleagues, share insights, provide updates on student progress, discuss curriculum development, and contribute to the ongoing enhancement of the musical theatre program
* Collaborate with voice instructors from the music department to exchange pedagogical techniques, share resources, and ensure alignment of curriculum standards, fostering a cohesive approach to vocal instruction across disciplines
* Engage in advisory meetings and committee work as required, actively contributing to the development and implementation of departmental policies, academic standards, and student support initiatives, demonstrating a commitment to the overall mission and success of the institution
* Prioritize duties and responsibilities in alignment with organizational objectives and growth initiatives, ensuring efficient allocation of time and resources to support the advancement of the musical theatre program and the broader goals of IAA 
* Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications / Required Skills

* Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred 
* Experience teaching high school or college-level students, demonstrating an understanding of adolescent or young adult learning styles, developmental needs, and academic expectations, and employing effective instructional strategies to facilitate student growth, engagement, and achievement in a diverse educational setting
* Possess a comprehensive understanding of musical theatre repertoire, including knowledge of diverse styles, composers, and historical contexts, enabling effective selection and instruction of repertoire tailored to students' skill levels, vocal abilities, and performance goals
* Professional experience as a vocalist or performer, with a proven track record of excellence in musical theatre or related performance contexts, showcasing proficiency in vocal technique, interpretation, stage presence, and versatility
* Demonstrate proficient piano skills, including the ability to accompany vocalists during lessons and rehearsals, provide musical support, and assist with repertoire exploration and interpretation
* Preferred experience with NATS, demonstrating familiarity with its standards and methodologies, and an understanding of its relevance to vocal pedagogy and the musical theatre industry
* Demonstrate a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, fostering an environment of respect, belonging, and accessibility for students of all backgrounds, identities, and abilities
