Georgia Southern University-Armstrong Campus in Savannah, Georgia

Led by leading voice and voice pedagogy teachers Lynn Helding, Allen Henderson, John Nix and Marci Rosenberg, the NATS Science-Informed Voice Pedagogy Institute — now in its fourth season — trains enrollees how to apply current voice science to their teaching, whether in the voice studio, ensemble rehearsal or academic classroom.

Participants from past years of “SCI-PI” have described the gathering as “a beautiful community of artists, teachers, and learners,” and the intensive one-week course as “mind-blowing!” and “hands down, the best NATS event I have ever attended.”

The course is built upon the three pillars of modern voice science: physiology, vocal tract acoustics, and cognitive science, and the four fundamental systems of the voice: respiration, phonation, acoustics and articulation. Related topics include:

  • Skeletal Alignment
  • Vibrato
  • Vocal Tract Acoustics for Novices
  • Registration
  • Training CCM Styles
  • Applying Exercise Physiology to Voice Training
  • Voice Health: Vocal Workload and Injury Prevention

Inspired by clear goals and outcomes, training sessions consist of traditional lectures, seminars, master classes, and open discussion forums.

By the end of the institute, enrollees should:

  • Possess both a historic and practical understanding of the three pillars of voice science.
  • Be able to define science-informed voice pedagogy and articulate its importance and value in 21st century voice training.
  • Know the existent science-informed voice pedagogy resources and how to access them.
  • Be both prepared and equipped to refresh their own course content and align course objectives with the new NATS science-informed pedagogy resources.
  • Be equipped with the resources to advocate for curricular change at their institutions.
  • Commit to a future in which every voice student is assured an education in a common foundation of science-informed voice pedagogy knowledge upon which  they themselves can build while advancing voice pedagogy through the 21st century.

The NATS Science-Informed Pedagogy Institute is open to all voice professionals keen to heighten their knowledge base to be truly “science-informed,” whether in the studio, the rehearsal hall, or the pedagogy classroom.
