The Journal of Singing (JOS) is Seeking Two Associate Editors for Brand-New Commercial Voice Column
Job Description
The Journal of Singing (JOS) is seeking two (2) authors for the positions of joint associate editors the brand-new JOS column, “Commercial Voice.” Guided by the editor in chief Matthew Hoch, these associate editors will create and define the content of this important new column in the Journal of Singing. These appointments will be made by November 1, 2026, and the associate editors will begin generating content in the spring of 2027.

Job Duties and Primary Responsibilities
Specific duties associated with management of the “Commercial Voice” column will be the following:
- Authorship of 5 regular columns per JOS volume, with an approximate length of 3,000–5,000 words with endnotes.
- Occasional contributions from guest authors. In these instances, the associate editor(s) will be assuming responsibility for editing the article and steering the guest author through the peer review process.
- JOS is published five times per year, with all author deadlines four months previous to publication, as follows:
o May 1 deadline for the Sept/Oct. issue
o July 1 deadline for Nov/Dec
o Sept 1 deadline for Jan/Feb
o Nov 1 deadline for March/April o Jan 1 deadline for May/June - Guest columns must be submitted for peer review at least two months in advance of the above deadlines.
- Note that these deadlines are fixed and cannot be altered.
Qualifications / Required Skills
Applicants must possess the following qualifications:
- experience with, knowledge of, and commitment to the field of amplified singing and its intersection with voice pedagogy
- a breadth of knowledge of current practice, research, and repertoire
- a strong (but not necessarily lengthy) record of quality peer-reviewed scholarship
- strong writing skills and facility with academic writing conventions
- proficiency in Microsoft Word
- excellent personal communication and organizational skills
- ability to meet strict publication deadlines

o AEs photos (headshots) and 200 word bios appear in every issue in which their column. appears. AEs are welcome to add their website links into their bios.
o AEs name and contact information are permanently printed on the JOS masthead and back. Issues of JOS are catalogued on the online database Project MUSE.
o Status as an expert in the field, as evidenced by a record of publication.
NATS Membership: It is our practice and expectation that all JOS personnel be dues-paying members of the association at the Professional or Emerging Professional level.
This is an unremunerated position.

The Journal of Singing is the official journal of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, providing current information about the teaching of singing as well as results of recent research in the field. A peer reviewed journal, it serves as an historical record and is a venue for teachers of singing and other scholars to share the results of their work in areas such as history, diction, voice science, medicine, and especially voice pedagogy. Journal of Singing is published five times annually (Sept/Oct, Nov/Dec, Jan/Feb, March/April, May/June).
