NYELA BASNEY, Conductor
Conductor Nyela Basney recently received critical acclaim for her debut with Light Opera Works: “ . . . the glorious sound coming from the large orchestra under the baton of Nyela Basney combine[d] to give [this production] fiery intensity…” (Chicago Sun-Times). During the summer of 2019, Miss Basney conducted Madama Butterfly and La Cenerentola with Operafestival di Roma and led the 26th edition of Orvieto Musica, Inc., an international chamber music festival presented annually in Italy of which she is the founder and Artistic Director.
She has recently conducted the Sarajevo Philharmonic Orchestra in concerts in Sarajevo and Brčko, presenting the European Premiere of Jacob Bancks’ “Lumen” with Daniel Paul Horn as pianist. Mis Basney also led three international tours of “Persuasion” with Chamber Opera Chicago one of which included a featured appearance at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2013
Miss Basney has conducted 100+ performances with the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra and the Midland-Odessa Symphony Orchestra and has also led performances of the Springfield (MA) Symphony, American Symphony Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic, Toledo Symphony and Virginia Symphony. She was Associate Conductor with El Paso Opera from 2000-2009 and has given two recital tours with noted Italian violinist, Alessandro Cervo (recent guest concertmaster of the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala) in 2012 and 2018. She attended the Eastman School of Music, receiving her undergraduate and graduate degrees in piano performance with highest distinction and on a full collaborative piano assistantship.
