Job Description / Duties

The Department of Music seeks a dynamic, creative Director of Voice Studies to provide artistic leadership and deliver curricular instruction. The ideal candidate will be a forward-thinking artist and pedagogue who is experienced in fostering a diverse, equitable and inclusive learning environment. They will have a vision of the voice area in its various facets: performance, pedagogy, leadership and organization of applied voice faculty, curriculum design, recruiting and community engagement. The position will begin in September 2022.

Position Responsibilities

Teaching: Specific teaching assignments of the position will reflect the candidate’s skill set and department needs including:
-Vocal literature
-Vocal pedagogy sequence for vocal performance and choral music education majors
-Vocal pedagogy for instrumental music education majors
-Diction Sequence: IPA as the gateway to singing in both Western European and World Languages
-Applied voice instruction

Scholarship:
-Engage in relevant research/scholarly/creative activity

Service:
-Administration and leadership of the voice area
-Collaborative outreach with voice faculty to recruit and retain students
-Organize and adjudicate entrance auditions and juries
-Actively participate in faculty governance and university service
-Create a strong regional presence and actively serve in relevant professional associations

Qualifications / Required Skills

Required Qualifications
-Master’s Degree in Music
-Evidence of successful university teaching in voice, pedagogy, literature and diction
-Demonstrated evidence of successful leadership and administrative experience
-Evidence of strong communication and interpersonal skills
-Demonstrated ability to cultivate learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications
-Earned Doctorate in Music
-Performance experience in solo voice and/or musical dramatic productions
-Participation in professional academic and/or music associations

The College of Fine and Performing Arts is comprised of the departments of Art/Art History, Design, Music, and Theatre and Dance, housed in eight buildings with five performance spaces, including a Performing Arts Center overlooking Bellingham Bay. The College also is home to the Music Library and Western Gallery and Public Art Collection, one of the top ten outdoor sculpture collections in the country.

The Music Department has 4 classified staff, 20 tenure-track/tenured faculty, 36 non-tenure track faculty, 5 temporary employees, and approximately 35 student employees. The department serves approximately 200 undergraduate majors and 12 graduate students annually and offers a variety of degrees in Music and Music Education. The department hosts hundreds of events and performances both on and off campus throughout the year, and serves as a focal point for the campus and the regional community through collaboration, participation and leadership in music performance and instruction.
