Title: President and Founder, Cantabile Project

Bio: Karen Hoy, originally from Philadelphia, received the Bachelor of Music degree from Temple University and Master of Science degree from The Juilliard School. Although an experienced opera and oratorio singer Ms. Hoy’s main love/passion has been art song and recital. Her major instructors were Ellen Faull, Estelle Liebling, and Eleanor Steber. She has won numerous vocal competitions including first place in the Liederkranz and second place Kosciusko Foundations vocal competitions. She was also awarded the Flagler Museum Recital Award. Prominent conductors she has worked with include Gustave Meier, Anton Coppola and James Conlon. As a young singer Ms. Hoy was a featured soloist at the Juilliard and Manhattan Schools of Music in both opera and oratorio. She has also sung numerous roles with the Bronx Opera Company and The Central Pennsylvania Opera Association. As a voice teacher at Penn State University she performed in solo and collaborative recitals with professional quartets, trios and instrumentalists numerous times each year. A special highlight each season was a staged all opera recital with baritone Robert Trehy. She also sang in many music festivals featuring the American composers Ezra Laderman and Stephen Foster along with Erik Satie and the American Moravian composers. As a voice teacher in Hampton Roads, Ms. Hoy maintains a private studio of advanced high school students and adults most of whom sing professionally. Her students have been accepted at major music schools and conservatories and former students sing at some of the major opera houses in the United States and Europe and on Broadway. She has been an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing for over 30 years and was an executive officer of the Virginia NATS from 2002 to 2011. Ms. Hoy is the Founder and President of the Cantabile Project, a solo vocal initiative serving solo singers in Hampton Roads.
