Title: Faculty
Bio: Dr. Sarah Lopez has enjoyed a life career of singing and teaching voice for more than 50 years. Dr. Lopez earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Voice Performance from USC and her Ph.D from UCSD where she studied the effects of lullabies and play songs on newborn infants. Sarah has soloed with major Southern California symphony orchestras in opera with Young Artists Program at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, LA Opera in addition to leading roles in musical theater. Her reviews praised her for her luscious voice and sincere acting abilities. With her string trio (voice, guitar and cello), she enjoys singing original arrangements of Latin jazz, Bossa Nova and classical music. Dr. Lopez has taught voice at MiraCosta College for 30 years, in addition to USC and UCSD. She has been a church choir director and led the children's choir at Garrison Elementary Glee in Oceanside. Her private studio in San Marcos, California also produces solo and small ensemble classes and concerts. Many of Sarah’s students have gone on to professional careers on Broadway, film and television, musical theater, opera, rock and popular venues. Dr. Lopez studied with master teachers Ester Andreas, Tom Cleveland, Horst Gunter, Madam Kodolfsky, Gerard Sousay, Dalton Baldwin and others. She brings the tradition forward while embracing scientific approaches that appeal to contemporary styles and students. Trained as a certified Listening Fitness Trainer since 1999, Dr. Lopez utilizes this sound stimulation (modified music and voice feedback) program to open and optimize and ear’s primary role in directing the voice for better tone quality, range, articulation, rhythm, posture, breathing and acquisition of foreign languages. Dr. Lopez’ approach has also been highly effective for integrating body- mind coordination for aging or stressed singers, slight autistic or learning disabled students and helping to overcome certain kinds of head, neck and post-surgery trauma. Dr. Lopez is dedicated to teaching each student on their own level so each can realize their dreams and aspirations to become the best singer possible. Her focus on the body as the instrument, and the “think” system are grounded in her work with the Alexander Technique, Tai Chi, yoga and meditation. It is remarkable how optimizing posture and learning mental directions of energy and sound put the voice and the singer in right relationship for outstanding results. Sarah is an enthusiastic and inspiring voice teacher who is wise, patient and effective. Most students are amazed at how much they learn that they can continue to work with on their own with noticeable improvement every week. Whether it's for sheer pleasure and fun or for a professional musical career, Dr. Lopez is dedicated to serving the needs and dreams of each student to help them realize their full potential and talent.
