Bio: Dr. Patrice Jégou-Oyelese was born in St. John's, Newfoundland and raised in Red Deer, Alberta. She is a Canadian ex-professional figure skater who took up singing at the suggestion of a cast-mate when she was skating in an ice show on tour in Mexico. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in classical vocal performance from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University (New Jersey), a Master of Music degree from Belmont University (Nashville), and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Calgary. She is the 2019 and 2020 winner of the INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARD for “Best A Cappella Song” for her tracks “Lover Come Back to Me” featuring Mark Kibble and Alvin Chea of TAKE 6 and “Wrap Your Troubles in Dreams” featuring TAKE 6 respectively.----------Patrice is a voting member of The Recording Academy (GRAMMY® Awards), and CARAS (Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences - The JUNO Awards). She is a Spring 2022 and Fall 2021 GRAMMY® U Mentor: a program that connects "college students with the industry's brightest and most talented minds, [and] provides aspiring professionals with the tools and opportunities necessary to start a career in music." Patrice is a 2022 NATS (National Association of the Teachers of Singing) presenter for the National Conference in Chicago. She, along with Yinka Oyelese, will present “Own Your Own: How to start your own independent record label and plan, produce, market, release, and promote your music.” She has been a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing since 2002, and in 2003 was the recipient of the prestigious NATS Summer Intern Teaching Scholarship. ----------Over the years Patrice has taught at the university level and privately. Her former students have gone on to successful teaching and performing careers in genres as diverse as opera and pop. Patrice particularly credits her time teaching in Nashville for providing her with a diverse student base which included singers interested in country, pop, rock, bluegrass, classical, gospel, and musical theatre. ----------Patrice has done two residencies at the Banff Center for the Performing Arts; has entered and won international singing competitions in Italy and Peru (Laureate, XIII Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques, [Théâtre Lyrichoregra, Montréal] chosen through audition to represent Canada in Orvieto, Italy in the XII Concorso Internazionale per Cantanti Lirici Spazio Musica; First Place Winner, IX Concurso y Festival Internacional de Canto Lírico Trujillo, Perú); and has collaborated and recorded with many artists and composers. ----------In April 2012 Patrice launched her own independent record label Prairie Star Records LLC. She has released three albums on her imprint. These include Patrice's debut album SPEAK LOW which was released on May 6, 2014, followed by IF IT AIN'T LOVE which was released on March 22, 2019. Patrice released her third album THERE'S A LIGHT on August 20, 2021. ----------Patrice’s career highlights include guest performances with KIRK WHALUM at the Berks Jazz Festival and TAKE 6 at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City. Patrice currently studies voice with Justin Stoney (New York), and piano with Shambhavi Mishra (Pittsburgh).
