Go to my website (www.bjsimon.com) and look on the “Singers” page, you’ll see that my top students have succeeded in a variety of genres – rock, R&B, a cappella, Americana, Blues, Sinatra, singer/songwriters, Indie Pop, and Musical Theater. (Most recently, JaQuita May singing back-up for Kurt Russell in The Christmas Chronicles, and for Steven Van Zandt on his international tour.) I don’t teach all those genres, yet I work with each student on their song selection. What I do teach (besides vocal technique), is the Musical Theater performance of songs - because it requires a deeper understanding of the plot and character development in the song, and the music is designed to work that way. It’s not about the sound, it’s about the source of the sound – where the song’s story is coming from. As soloists, my students have 4 original CDs, and have appeared on 5+ other CDs - which have been played on 6 radio stations. Some have performed on TV singing contests (including Oprah’s), as a winner of a national a cappella award, and VH1.com has praised one. Two singers have YouTube videos with 35,000+ and 13,000+ views.
You can learn more by looking at my book “Singing – Body and Soul: A Medley of Fresh Ideas about Musical Theater” on Amazon.com. Click on the “Look Inside” button, and you can read the entire Table of Contents, and part of the first chapter. The book is endorsed by Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime) and given a 4-star review on Goodreads.com by Deke Sharon (Pitch Perfect).
