Bio:

Hailed for his “flexible" ringing tenor notes and comfortability in performing diverse repertoire, Mexican-American tenor Josaphat Contreras is excited to perform In Mazatlan, Mexico for a second time. Contreras completed his M.M. in Voice Pedagogy from the New England Conservatory of Music, where he was selected as the commencement speaker for the graduating class of 2022. Josaphat’s most notable credits include being a soloist with the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra in historic Mechanics hall, Mexican debut as Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the historic Teatro Ángela Peralta in Mazatlán, Mexico, performing as a Holiday Singer in an 8 show run with the Boston Pops Orchestra at the historic symphony hall in Boston, Massachusetts.

In 2023, Contreras won 1st prize for his Mariachi research at the National Opera Association poster presentation competition and made his company debut with Connecticut Lyric Opera in the same year. As a researcher, Josaphat presented his Mariachi research presentation at the Pan-American Vocology Association, Arizona State University, and in July 2025 at the International Congress of Voice Teachers. Other artistic feats include a part of Boston Lyric Opera’s Madame Butterfly and La Cenerentola productions, company debut with On Site Opera in their sold out run of J.S. Bach Coffee Cantata, and in April 2025 an Ariel Ramirez’ Missa Criolla tour performance throughout southern Spain. For the 2024-2025 school year, Josaphat was named a Fulbright COMEXUS Garcia-Robles Scholar and will be based in Mexico city studying and doing research on Mexican folk music and Mariachi vocal technique. When Josaphat is not working in music, he enjoys spending time with his partner Amanda Contreras, their daughter Ava Michelle.
