I rely on musicianship and a visceral, body-oriented feedback approach to develop a natural vocal technique. I use a combination of scientific knowledge with breathing, movement, and meditation practices to cultivate body awareness. I apply my professional experience as a facilitator to help students to use their ears and become aware of their bodies’ limits so that, over time, they can become their own teachers. Throughout this cultivation, I develop the elements of musicianship such as ear training, rhythmic understanding, note reading, and basic theory. I also teach improvisation for the singer.
I have degrees in ecology and in music from the University of Vermont and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, respectively. I perform extensively as a violist and jazz/R&B singer. Occasionally, my singing work extends to musical theater and choral music. I am currently training in the Estill Voice method.
My studio is at Asheville Music School, and I teach by Skype.
