Title: Associate Professor of Voice

Bio:

A Fulbright scholar in Paris, coloratura soprano Laura Hynes spent six years abroad in France and Germany, performing repertoire ranging from baroque opera with Les Arts Florissants to "classical cabaret" on French television and radio. She has performed opera roles, solo recitals, and concerts throughout Europe, the US, and Canada, in venues including New York's Alice Tully Hall, the Barbican in London, the Châtelet, Opéra Comique and the Cité de la Musique in Paris, Opéra de Marseille, Opéra de Montpellier, as well as major venues in Seville, Brussels, Madrid, Lisbon, Frankfurt, and more. In 2015, Hynes joined the performing arts faculty at the University of Calgary, where she is currently an associate professor. Her research interests stretch across performance, pedagogy, and Alexander Technique. She was co-lead on a SSHRC Insight Development Grant with the "Key of T" project on transgender voice transition, and continues to develop her "Raise Your Voice" recitals at the intersection of song and social change.

She holds degrees from the University of Minnesota (D.M.A.) where she was the Carolyn Bailey & Dominick Argento Fellow, the Paris Conservatory (Cycle de perfectionnement), the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (M.M.), and Miami University (B.M.). She was a NATS intern in 2014, and a Visiting Assistant Professor at Murray State University during the 2014-2015 academic year. She is currently enrolled in the 1600-hour Alexander Technique teacher training program at the Balance Arts Center in New York City.
