Bio: I work to help my students develop secure technical skills and strong performance practices. I am very conscious of helping singers find repertoire that fits who they are in terms of voice quality, age, skill level, and general interest. I believe it is important to work on developing weak areas in one's technique, but I also focus on figuring out what the singer does well from the beginning. If a singer is particularly gifted singing a particular song or style of music, I work to see what they are doing naturally to cause this to happen and if we can find ways of bringing this ease to more challenging areas of their technique. I find the voice is working best when counterproductive tensions are released throughout the body and the breath is moving easily and freely. \n \nAs a performer I have specialized in singing repertoire mostly from the opera/classical genre and musical theatre. I have sung with Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap Opera, and with the Mittelsachsiches Theater over in Germany. I have experience teaching singers who are interested in the fields of Pop, Rock, Gospel and Folk music. \n \nI hold a Bachelor of Music degree from James Madison University and a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from George Mason University. I have taught group voice classes at George Mason University and I am presently teaching privately through George Mason University's Mason Community Arts Academy located in Fairfax, Virginia, just outside of Washington D.C. I also maintain private studios in northern Virginia, southern Maryland and the Washington D.C. areas. I continue to perform as both a singer and an actor. I have appeared with a number of performing arts organizations throughout the Washington D.C. metro area in addition to work overseas in Germany. I am a full member of the American Guild of Musical Artists, (AGMA). Please feel free to visit my website at www.jamesmyers.com
