Title: Associate Professor in Music Education
Bio: I am an internationally recognised singer and singing teacher, with a background in Biology (5-year degree), a Master and PhD in Performance Studies (singing), and more than 10 years’ experience as an Associate Professor in Music and Education. My research is on singing voice performance studies, focusing on issues related to female singer’s health and wellbeing and to performance optimisation strategies, both applied to education, working conditions and genre and singing styles studies. I started to be an independent researcher as the CI of a White Rose Building Capacity Grant, UK. In 2007, I was awarded 20000€ from a pharmaceutical company to buy equipment for voice research. Since then, I am the PI of 3 international on-going projects with researchers at KTH, Stockholm (2012), Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber and University of Music Carl Maria von Weber, Dresden (2013), and Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, NYU (2014). I am an Associate Editor of Logopedics Phoniatrics Vocology, a permanent member of the Pan-European Voice Conference advisory board and a referee for ISI journals: Logopedics Phoniatrics Vocology, Journal of Voice and Folia Phoniatrica et Logopedica. I was an Assistant Editor of Tension in the Performance (2011-2013) and a member of 6 scientific international evaluation panels. I have a substantial publication record: 14 articles in peer reviewed journals; 13 articles published as conference proceedings; 3 book chapters (one in press); 1 scientific revision of the Portuguese version of “Principles of Voice Production”, by Ingo Titze, USA; and 2 reviews of scientific books, one in music education and one in singing pedagogy. I am currently editing a book on training the female voice, to be published by Campton Publishers, UK in 2016. I was a keynote speaker at 14 conferences (8 international and 6 national). In addition, I have presented 21 plenary lessons at higher education institutions (14 international and 7 national), delivered 10 workshops (9 international and 1 national), and given 6 singing master classes (3 international and 3 national). My research has been orally presented at 47 conferences (38 international and 9 national) and as posters at 7 conferences. Other research activities include the organization of 8 conferences (6 international and 2 national). I have been an invited teacher at 2 international courses awarding ECTS: a Master Degree in “Phonetics and Phonology” at CSIC and UIMP, Madrid and a Summer Course “Function of the Singing Voice”, at KTH, Stockholm. I also have developed several continuing education courses in Portugal, Finland and Germany. I supervised 1 PhD and 13 masters and co-supervised 1 PhD and 2 masters. I evaluated 6 PhD theses (5 in Portugal and 1 in the UK), and 10 master theses. My activities have granted me 6 international and 1 national prestigious awards; The Van Lawrence Award (2015) was for the first time in 24 years awarded to a researcher outside US.
