Job Description / Duties
Hey y’all! You’ll be giving mostly 1:1 evidence-based CCM (ie: non-classical) singing lessons to our diverse adult student body. Most of the clients are age 20-40, with mixed gender identities. A large proportion of our clients are Chinese or Chinese American and some want to sing in Mandarin or another Asian language.
We, of course, provide the studio space and you also won’t be doing unpaid admin tasks normally like booking, answering student email, etc. We have support staff that handles that.
Nothing (such as admin or rent) is deducted from your hourly pay, just the usual taxes and so.
The studios are located at 8th Ave at about W37th St near NYC Penn Station and also not too far from Times Square Station. It’s about 4 “short blocks” from the Port Authority building at 8th and 40th.
It’s W2 employment.
Qualifications / Required Skills
We’re looking for someone with at least a Masters in straight up vocal pedagogy, not a combo degree but it’s okay if you have a separate performance degree ofc. We have a bass, a baritone, a tenor, and soprano on staff now so extra points if you’re a treble voice.
You should play piano okay (chord notation/jazz notation/“faking” is much more useful than classical sight-reading skills here, aside from the ability to play the melody which is also necessary).
Although most of our people can teach classical, there’s rarely a need for it except maybe if you want to go exploring with an adventurous client or for occasional pedagogical reasons
You should be friendly and easy to get along with, personable, and we strongly prefer people with that positive energy element. Enthusiasm is a great asset.
You should be adept at teaching both online sessions and in person sessions. We need you to be in the NYC metro area.
If you are great to be around, we will also accept those who are in process of their pedagogical degree (Masters or Doctorate). If you were planning to do this degree this year, we 100% want to hear from you, especially if you are a soprano or mezzo
Our hiring process goes like this:
1. Screen for pedagogical degrees or those in process of such
2. 15-30 minute meet and greet with the Studio Head
3. 2.5 hour, 3 student audition (we provide the students) which is graded 3 ways:
A. Your 1-2 paragraph per client assessment of the client and their voice and needs, and a plan to go forward if they immediately became your student
B. Students evaluate you using a 10 question after-lesson survey. Most of these are star ratings of 1-10 for different aspects of the lesson such as enjoyment, if they felt they sang better after, etc. 2 are 1-2 sentence written answers (what was your favourite part of the lesson, what was your least favourite)
C. Your audition is observed and rated by the studio head. We’re looking for high EQ interactions, evidence-based pedagogy, professionalism, and if the students sang better or had an “aha!” moment
Additional Information
We want to start you Wednesdays and Saturdays. More days can be made available if you’re diggin it. For Saturdays, the eventual hours will be approximately 10a-6.30p with 2 half-hour breaks. Wednesdays, the eventual hours will be 1p-9.30p with breaks ofc. We will start you 11a-1.30p Saturdays and 4.30-7p Wednesdays and build your schedule out from that.
The clients you’ll have will be built up over time as they enroll, but occasionally people inherit them from teachers who move on (the most common reason is to get another degree)
We get a strong influx of clients from around 15 Sept to around 31 Oct, so please don’t have blackout dates during that time. We’d love to start you right after Labor Day
If you have a doctorate in vocal ped, we will pay you toward the top of our starting scale, so please still apply, we won’t think you’re over-qualified
If you are ND, we are ND friendly
Salary: $51-53 for a vocal pedagogy masters
