Job Description / Duties

The School of Music ( at DePauw University invites applications for a tenure-track position in applied voice beginning August 2023 at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. Any voice type is welcome. We strongly encourage applicants who are musically versatile and can perform and teach in several styles, such as Western classical music, musical theatre, CCM, etc. A commitment to undergraduate pre-professional voice teaching within a liberal arts environment, inclusive pedagogy, and contributing to a forward-thinking and innovative culture are essential.

The School specifically seeks candidates to teach undergraduate applied voice and voice-area courses. Primary responsibilities include building and maintaining a voice studio (e.g., recruiting); providing excellent, versatile vocal instruction in a wide range of musical styles and traditions; and, emphasizing vocal health and the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Responsibilities may also include teaching other voice area courses such as diction for singers, vocal pedagogy, scenes course, and solo vocal literature, depending on the candidate’s qualifications and the needs of the School of Music. Funding is available for professional development and research with undergraduate students.

In 2015, the DePauw University School of Music launched the 21st-Century Musician (21CM) Initiative. This involved a complete reimagining of the skills, tools, and experiences necessary to create musicians of the future—flexible, entrepreneurial professionals who explore diverse traditional/non-traditional performance spaces, cultivate new audiences, and utilize their art innovatively to impact and strengthen communities. DePauw is one of few programs nationally to require a multi-course entrepreneurial music curriculum. Within the next two years, the School of Music will become a part of a larger school incorporating disciplines in the creative and performing arts. In addition to developing artistic excellence in their discipline, music students will encounter frameworks for interdisciplinary exploration, collaboration, and innovation. All faculty members have an opportunity to help shape this vision.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Minimum Required Qualifications:
● M.M. required
● Evidence of professional-level voice performance

Preferred Qualifications:
● Doctorate in music
● College-level teaching experience
● Record of success in recruitment
● A secondary area of expertise/interest including, but not limited to:
 ○ Performance in multiple genres (classical, new music, jazz, global musics, musical theatre, etc.)
 ○ Improvisation
 ○ Interdisciplinary collaboration
 ○ Expertise in creativity/design thinking/innovation
 ○ Community-based projects
 ○ Skills in another art form
