Job Description / Duties

The Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor of Opera / Stage Director / Director of Production for Eastman Opera Theatre, beginning on 1 July 2023. This is a tenure-eligible faculty position with the expectation of residency in Rochester. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.

The successful candidate will be a proven stage director who is dedicated to teaching in a robust training program for young singers. Essential duties include teaching courses for all voice majors and for graduate majors in acting and stage direction, and directing one fully staged Eastman Opera Theatre production each season. The ideal candidate will have directed in all forms of lyric theater (contemporary opera, traditional opera, and music theater).

As Director of Production for Eastman Opera Theatre, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing all full-time and part-time production staff as well student stage management personnel. It is expected that this person will utilize professional contacts as well as members of the local theatre community in the hiring of designers and technicians.

Applicants must demonstrate success in directing undergraduate and graduate singer-actors in full productions. Expectations include a deep commitment to mentoring students in their professional development, excellent collaboration with artistic and production staff, and promoting dialogue and broadening engagement among members of underrepresented groups.
