Job Description / Duties

INTRODUCTION
The University of Connecticut (UConn) is pleased to invite applications for a faculty position in the Department of Music at the rank of Assistant Professor in Residence for a Vocal Coach/Conductor and Staff Accompanist. It is a nine-month, full-time position in the Department of Music beginning Fall 2022. The Department seeks a dynamic collaborative pianist to serve as a full-time vocal coach, coordinator and director of opera, and staff accompanist. The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional keyboard skills, fluency in a broad range of vocal styles, expertise in vocal diction, music directing/conducting experience in opera, and a commitment to repertoire from diverse cultures and underrepresented groups.

Primary responsibilities will typically include coaching voice students and serving as a vocal coach, coordinator of the opera program, and music director for mainstage productions of opera. Additional responsibilities could include teaching collaborative piano; teaching undergraduate courses for voice majors; assisting with special projects involving graduate and undergraduate voice majors; accompanying voice auditions; recitals and studio class performances for voice majors; and administrative service as assigned.

The Department of Music at the University of Connecticut is a fully accredited, institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music with 20 full-time faculty members, 25 part-time faculty members, 165 undergraduate students, and 30 graduate students. The Department provides a wide range of opportunities for music and intellectual growth with degrees offered at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. Its faculty takes an interdisciplinary and wide-ranging approach to music teaching and learning, engaging in collaborations across the University. The successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, innovative courses and instruction methods, and mentoring of students in research, outreach, and professional development. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through research, teaching, and/or public engagement the commitment to, and support of, diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

APPOINTMENT TERMS
This is a full-time, 9-month position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2022. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Faculty may also be asked to teach at one of UConn’s regional campuses as part of their ordinary workload.

Qualifications / Required Skills

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Master of Music degree and past professional activity as a music director is required. Teaching experience at the university level and/or in young artist programs as well as a strong background in vocal accompanying and excellent sight-reading skills are required. Conducting experience; finalists will be expected to conduct an opera chorus with an ensemble as part of the interview process.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
DMA degree or equivalent professional experience. Some experience in instrumental accompanying is preferred. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as a willingness to collaborate with colleagues across the department are also preferred. A strong interest in and experience with community engagement and outreach is desirable.
