Job Description / Duties

The University of the South seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor of Voice. Soprano or Alto preferred, other voice types considered. A successful candidate hired at the Associate level will be considered for department chair. Full-time, tenure-track, effective July 1, 2019.

The Music Department contributes energetically to campus culture, encompassing five faculty-led student ensembles; facilitating tracks within the music major in performance, music history/culture, and theory/comp; and collaborating with the other departments including Theatre, International and Global Studies, and Environmental Arts and Humanities.

The Department of Music seeks a vibrant vocalist to teach undergraduate applied voice and to teach other classes relevant to his/her expertise (e.g., music appreciation, song literature, opera history, musical theater, and/or other topical courses). As a key member of the music department at this small liberal arts college, she or he will also contribute in other areas reflective of his/her background. One of the department’s historical strengths is in music of the Episcopal/Anglican tradition, and a candidate’s ability to contribute to a program in church music will be an asset, as will a candidate’s experience in arts administration.

Qualifications / Required Skills

The successful candidate will have significant professional vocal experience, whether in Broadway, opera, or chamber idioms, and will possess demonstrated potential to develop a thriving voice studio. Experience directing operatic or musical theater scenes will be to the candidate’s advantage. Continued professional activity is required for contract renewal. This position is DMA preferred, but ABDs will be considered.
