Job Description / Duties

Position

The University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, Kaufman School of Dance, and School of Dramatic Arts invites applicants for a new voice faculty position in Musical Theatre. This is the inaugural faculty appointment in the Thornton School of Music for the new collaboration between the three schools.

The appointment is non-tenure track, full-time fixed-term, renewable and open-rank. It is expected to begin in August 2019 with earlier, paid duties including screening student applicant videos (December 2018) and participating in the audition process (January/February 2019).

The Undergraduate student body at USC is extraordinarily diverse: it is racially and ethnically a majority/minority population with a full range of expressions of gender, ability and sexual identities which we embrace as a source of institutional strength and community pride. The University’s commitment to building an academic environment hospitable to this wide range of diversity is full and complete. To that end, we are seeking to create as diverse a pool of candidates as possible; one which reflects the broad spectrum of identities that comprise the country as well as the field of musical theater.

Housed in the School of Dramatic Arts, the BFA in Musical Theatre is a rigorous, cohort-based, conservatory-style undergraduate program featuring comprehensive training in acting, voice, dance, dramaturgy, script-writing, lyrics writing, and composition. It offers students the opportunity for a transformative artistic journey as their foundational training is augmented by classes in the latest applications for musical theatre, including digital entrepreneurship and the on-screen musical.

Taking advantage of the unparalleled resources and faculty of the School’s prestigious partner arts schools at USC, including the USC Thornton School of Music and the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance, this degree will offer singular opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and creativity.

Duties

Principal duties will include: 1) Teaching individual instruction in Musical Theatre vocal styles and techniques to Musical Theatre majors and minors. 2) Teaching performance courses such as Vocal Performance, Song Interpretation, Pop/Rock Styles, as well as others. 3) Working in collaboration with faculty from other disciplines to create a holistic experience. 4) Participate in recruitment, audition and selection for prospective musical theatre students. 5) Participate in recruitment and selection of future faculty in Musical Theatre.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Required qualifications: successful candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience with demonstrated professional success in musical theatre, expansive exposure to and networking within the musical theatre industry; they will be expected to have a demonstrated track record of experience and accomplishment working in a highly diverse environment and of promoting equity and inclusion in the work that they do and in their approach to the profession.

Additionally, qualified applicants must be able to demonstrate ability and experience in teaching vocal production for musical theatre, as well as musical theatre styles such as traditional musical theatre, belt technique, pop, rock, and hip hop.
