Job Description / Duties

Duties: Direct one Main Stage (with orchestra) or one Studio (with piano) production per term, while simultaneously leading any of the comprehensive opera workshop classes that are part of a prescribed sequence of courses for both graduates and undergraduates, as determined by the Voice Department. Develop and teach additional courses or seminars in related areas, based on individual skills and experience coupled with departmental strategy. Participate in faculty governance, attend faculty and departmental meetings, serve on committees at both departmental and university levels as needed.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications: We seek an experienced stage director who is interested in contributing to a vibrant vocal arts program dedicated to the overall development of the classical vocalist in the 21st century, in which opera is an integral component. The ideal candidate will have a broad and thorough knowledge of operatic repertoire appropriate to both developing and pre-professional artists, a sustained and distinguished professional career as a director, and prior academic experience in the systematic teaching of stage-centric skills to singers. A documented history of collaboration and collegiality with co-workers and/or faculty members is crucial. The person in question should have knowledge of the operatic field as it exists today, and a vision for a methodology in the acquisition of theatrical skills that prepare students for the professional stage and that closely aligns to the overall mission of the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance and the U-M Vocal Department.
