The Department of Music at Missouri State University, in Springfield, Missouri, seeks applicants for a Department Head of Music beginning July 1, 2022.

About the Department: The Missouri State Department of Music is a vibrant part of the Reynolds College of Arts and Letters. An All-Steinway School composed of 37 full-time and approximately 20 part-time faculty members, the department offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees, as well as certificate programs, across a broad range or areas, including music education, performance, composition, jazz, vocal studies, electronic and recording arts, and musical theater in newly upgraded state-of-the-art facilities.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Required Qualifications: Candidate must have terminal degree (doctorate) in music and be tenurable as a full professor in the Department of Music. Must have documented administrative experience, including responsibility for recruitment and evaluation of personnel, guiding curriculum development, budgeting, and promotion and support of faculty scholarship. Must demonstrate a strong record of scholarship/creative activity in a music area of expertise. Must demonstrate support of initiatives in online education. Must demonstrate commitment to fostering a diverse environment. Must be successful in teaching, research/creative activity, and service. Must have excellent communication skills.

Additional Information

Duties: The Department Head provides active leadership in strategic planning; recruitment and retention; curriculum and scheduling; hiring and evaluation of faculty; budget management; accreditation (NASM); and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. The Department Head leads faculty in articulating the unit’s vision and in setting goals to attain it. The Department Head of Music also works closely with the Foundation and College on fundraising/development efforts.
