Job Description / Duties
The Hugh Hodgson School of Music seeks a dynamic and skilled pedagogue to teach Musical Theatre voice and assist with the leadership and continued development of Musical Theatre programs in the School of Music, Department of Theatre and Film Studies, and Department of Dance.
The selected candidate will be appointed a UGA lecturer, limited-term, with teaching comprising 100% of the load, without tenure. Date of Appointment: August 1, 2025
Responsibilities
- Provide group and private voice instruction, principally in singing techniques for the Broadway stage and other CCM (Contemporary Commercial Music) styles.
- Work with music director as needed to coach principals and ensembles and assist with management of performers’ vocal health throughout rehearsal and production process.
- Assist in leadership of the Musical Theatre Certificate program, contributing to its management, overall vision, strategic plan, and future development.
- Work with faculty and staff in music, theatre, and dance in close and helpful collaboration, teaching, and production.
- Fully participate in the vocal area of the School of Music, including hearing auditions, juries, and other activities.
- Assist with other duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Required Skills
Required Qualifications
- A terminal degree (MFA, DMA, PhD) in music or theatre. Candidates lacking an MFA or a doctoral degree must document exceptional accomplishments in the professional field and must be approved for a terminal degree exception before hire.
- At least three years’ experience in a professional musical theatre performance and/or teaching career.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching CCM vocal technique and style.
- Demonstrated expertise in the repertoires and production of musical theatre.
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students and faculty.
- Willingness to attend evening and weekend rehearsals and performances as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Specialized training in voice pedagogy for CCM styles, either as part of the terminal degree or through other programs (two graduate courses or the equivalent).
- Additional expertise in directing for theatre or opera, musical direction, choreography, or arranging.
- Prior teaching of courses such as Musical Theatre history, Musical Theatre Repertoire/Styles, CCM Voice Pedagogy.
- Familiarity with curriculum development.
- Ability to teach classical voice.
