Job Description / Duties

We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s student body as a Lecturer I (3 year appointment non-tenure track position) of Music beginning in the 2025-2026 academic year. This position is a continuing appointment position renewable upon successful periodic performance evaluations and budget availability.

Individual selected will direct Mariachi Ensembles and teach voice lessons to undergraduate and graduate students in Mariachi concentrations. Teach additional courses on mariachi and Mexican regional music as needed. Develop a collaborative environment and cultivate positive relationships with campus and community. Have a commitment to effective instruction, mentoring, community outreach and recruitment. Integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods.

Department/College Background
The UTRGV School of Music is located on the Brownsville and Edinburg campuses and prepares students to succeed as teachers, performers, and scholars by studying diverse musical styles, genres, and traditions; conducting research; and collaborating with each other as well as with local, national, and global communities. Through extensive community engagement, service learning, and exceptional performance opportunities, we expand the understanding of music and enrich the cultural life in our local society and beyond. The School of Music has over 400 students and over 50 faculty members. Degrees offered include a Bachelor of Music with Teacher Certification, a Bachelor of Music in Performance, and Master’s Degrees with concentrations in Music Education, Performance, Ethnomusicology, Theory-Composition, Multiple Instrument Performance, and Conducting.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Minimum Qualifications: MM in Voice, Mariachi, Education or related field, or a BM in Music from an accredited institution with significant professional experience commensurate with a master’s degree.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
* Experience performing in Mexican regional music styles
* Demonstrated teaching expertise in Mexican regional music
* Experience directing Mariachi ensembles
* Expertise in Spanish diction
* Expertise in different regions and styles of Mexican music
* Expertise in one or more Mariachi instruments (violin, trumpet, or armonía)

Preferred Qualifications: Performance, teaching experience and/or demonstrated understanding of principles of voice pedagogy in the Western Classical style.

Additional Information

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length
