Job Description / Duties

The Department of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham invites applications for a one-year, potentially renewable full-time, temporary, non-tenure track visiting assistant professor, beginning in the Fall of 2021. Primary responsibility will be to teach applied voice to undergraduate music and musical theatre majors and graduate music education students, with secondary responsibilities in opera production and other areas of the candidate’s expertise, as needed. Candidates with significant professional experience in musical theatre performance are especially encouraged to apply.

Qualifications / Required Skills

A Master’s degree in music is required along with evidence of effective voice studio teaching in both classical and musical theatre genres. Because the faculty in the Department of Music are a mutually supportive community, evidence of professional and collegial collaboration with colleagues is an important qualification for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

Doctorate in Music or significant professional experience in musical theatre performance.

Applicants should submit a cover letter which includes the names and contact information for three professional references and links to recordings (video preferred, audio accepted) of the candidate singing three pieces in varying styles, with indications of the dates of the performances. Additionally, a curriculum vitae and statement of teaching philosophy is required. Recommendation letters are NOT required at this time, and will be requested of finalists. Finalists will be asked to submit video documentation of the teaching of voice lessons.
